ABOUT

These Are My Flowers: My Story of Composting Trauma Into Colorful Art is a compilation of art, poems, and memoir-style stories from abstract artist Medora Frei.

Medora shares her journey of being diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at age 18, her husband’s traumatic health scare, and a childhood uprooted by divorce. She explores the many ways art has been a way for her to compost her pain into something meaningful and new. She also shares a guide for an intuitive painting session you can try yourself.

“Composted pain does not turn into hatred; it turns into an ability to learn, grow, and share something beautiful with others.”

This book mentions medical trauma and suicidal ideation.

Reviews:
"Through painting, Medora Frei pays homage to the duality of grief and joy. In "These Are My Flowers," she gives voice to the undercurrents of her artistic work, which have emerged on canvas in nebulous splashes of shape and color. Unbound by genre, she tells a heartfelt story of finding her way from trauma to art in poems, journal entries, and memoir-esque vignettes alongside the paintings and sketches that emerged from her life's journey. "These Are My Flowers" is an inspiring creative hub and a space for forgiveness, self-love, hope, and advocacy."

“In These Are My Flowers, Medora perfectly captures the bittersweet duality of life. She is generous and specific with details about her cystic fibrosis story, and I’m grateful for a look inside her medical process and a reminder that you never know what other people are going through day after day. The raw emotions felt through the pages about her husband’s medical scare were palpable, and the desire for but striving to let go of perfectionism in her art as she pursues healing is relatable. All of this paired with a painting on every page is a reflection that even though life can be difficult, something beautiful and colorful can emerge from the pain and brokenness. Thank you, Medora, for sharing your story.”
